theories of asian architecture

Author's Note

Through this module, I was introduced to various architecture styles and identity of traditional buildings from Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Laos.

In the end, I have developed a critical perspective on the transition of architecture from traditional to contemporary throughout the years. The language of Asian Architecture has helped with my understanding towards the architectural and place identity of the traditional buildings in my own country which faces an intersection. between tradition and modernity.

jalan tun h.s lee

Reflection :

For this assignment, we were tasked to choose a street in Malaysia to carry out our case study on the tangible and intangible context of the street. I choosed  Jalan Tun H.S Lee as it was street I was familiar with and was the most interested in due to its rich historical context and cultural identity.

Through site visits and extensive research, I learned that Jalan Tun H.S Lee, although concentrated with religious buildings and traditional trades, was also a victim of modernism as skyscrapers and modern buildings towered over the area. As part of the new generation, I look forward to seeing our country in a more urban and upscale state. However, the case study on Jalan Tun H.S Lee made me realise that our future as a progressive nation should not be the result of sacrificing our traditional sites. Hence, as an architect in the future, I intend to keep in mind the cultural context of a site as part of the design consideration.

jalan hang lekir

Reflection :

Assignment 2 was a group project at which our group choosed Jalan Hang Lekir as our street with a significant issue. Jalan Hang Lekir is a bustling street that intersects Petaling Street from Jalan Tun H.S Lee and Jalan Sultan. Through research and virtual site visits, we identified that Jalan Hang Lekir is facing an issue with architecture and place identity as the street is saturated with street vendors and informal businesses which led to the commercialization and gentrification of the street.

In the end, we resulted that the place identity and architectural elements of Jalan Hang Lekir should be made a priority despite the invasion of commercialism. We decided on our stance after reading up on various case studies on shophouses in Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore which faced similar issues. In the end, we learned to interpret significant issues that affects the framework of traditional Asian Architecture and to have a deep understanding on how the issues would affect the cultural context of the sites in the long run.
